The Client

The Swedish company freespee is a cloud-based communication platform that makes marketing, sales, and service teams better at what they do. At freespee they believe that every consumer deserves a personalized and fulfilling conversational experience. Freespee is doing this by allowing consumer-facing brands to have contextualized conversations with their web and app users by combining multiple data silos into a single digital function.

Freespee was founded in Sweden in 2009 and is active in 15 European markets as well as in the US. To this date (April 2021) the investors, Business Angels, Inventure, and Sunstone Capital have invested 5.2 million euros in the company. In addition, freespee has now launched its analysis tool for mobile phone advertising in Germany.

Business Challenge

As their platform is growing rapidly across Europe, the Swedish company had to look into extending their team in Germany to further develop their business. Among others, the German business is growing and therefore the company needed local employees based in Germany.

While expanding companies would typically opt for establishing a local legal entity in Germany, Freespee took the strategic decision to keep the domestic overhead low by setting up as a foreign employer in Germany. Freespee manages its entire human resource department centrally in Paris.

Our Approach

By setting up as a foreign employer in Germany, freespee got the benefit of having local support on the ground and having a work contract signed with their UK company. Further, freespee stayed compliant when it came to their compliance obligations, and yet, did not have to incorporate a German company. Consulting house was able to guide and support freespee with the administration to hire their very first sales director to represent and grow their business in Germany while being based in Paris.Our customer success team worked intensively together with freespee adjusting the workflow to seamlessly exchange payroll-related data along Consultinghouse, freespee in Paris as well as freespee's employees in Germany.
